CULTURAL CHANGE (NAMIBIA)
This
expedition begins in the Hartmann Valley, close to Marienfluss and the
Kunene River in Namibia. On the way to the small town of Opuwo, Dr.
Abati's team participates in an omamberero feast in honor of ancestors.
The traditional Himba celebrate this ritual together with those who
have been acculturated by missionaries. The team also meets a bride
carrying out her rite of isolation. Once in Opuwo, the team members
observe the contrast between traditional Himba existence and a new
market economy. This modernization, imposed in the name of progress,
brings risks and new problems along with it. |
