HAMAR
(ETHIOPIA)
Dr.
Abati’s team enters Ethiopia to live with a tribe only recently
studied: the Hamar. In accordance with the Hamar’s rules of
hospitality, Dr. Abati is “adopted” by Kuelle, a family patriarch. The
team visits the Hamar’s farming lands, protected from voracious birds.
The women, who adorn their bodies with animal skins and bracelets, bear
scars on their backs that mark their initiation into marriage. The team
observes an incipient form of apiculture, or beekeeping, and visits an
exotic intertribal market, where Hamar youth participate in courting
dances.. |
